All vertebrates share a basic skeletal pattern of an <I>axial skeleton</I> and an <I>appendicular skeleton.</I> The axial skeleton consists of the skull, the spinal column, and the ribs. The appendicular skeleton is made up of the bones of the appendages--arms, legs, wings, or fins--and their supports.
